Just Add Wetlands, Corporation (JAW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing scientific research on the biodegradation of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), also known as “Forever Chemicals.” PFAS are a large family of synthetic chemicals used since the 1930s in countless everyday products, from non-stick cookware and waterproof fabrics to cosmetics, packaging, and firefighting foams. Because of their exceptionally strong carbon-fluorine bonds, PFAS do not easily break down. They persist in soil, water, wildlife, and the human body.

Today, PFAS contamination has been detected in all 50 U.S. states, affecting drinking water, ecosystems, and public health. Nearly half of U.S. tap water is estimated to contain PFAS. Scientific studies have linked PFAS exposure to numerous health concerns, including thyroid disorders, immune system impacts, birth defects, and certain cancers.

Just Add Wetlands

OUR MISSION

JAW exists to explore and expand sustainable, nature-based solutions for PFAS remediation, specifically through constructed wetlands and redox-based biodegradation processes. Scientific research increasingly shows that wetlands, when supported by the right microbial communities and alternating aerobic/anaerobic conditions, can significantly reduce PFAS levels through natural chemical reactions and microbial degradation.

  • Advance research on PFAS biodegradation in wetland environments

  • Support microbial and redox-based solutions shown to reduce PFAS levels

  • Promote methods that protect water quality, communities, wildlife, and ecosystems

  • Ensure equitable, science-backed solutions accessible to all

WHY WETLANDS?

Energy-intensive technologies, incineration, plasma reactors, supercritical oxidation—can break down PFAS, but at enormous financial and environmental cost. Constructed wetlands, by contrast:

  • Operate with natural redox cycles essential to PFAS breakdown

  • Support microbial populations (including strains of Pseudomonas) shown to facilitate defluorination

  • Provide a sustainable, low-energy, environmentally restorative alternative

  • Have demonstrated PFAS removal efficiencies of 77–95% in pilot studies

Wetlands offer a promising pathway forward for communities facing contamination—and for the world’s watersheds at large.

OUR PURPOSE

Just Add Wetlands, Corporation is committed to helping fill critical gaps in PFAS research and to promoting equitable, accessible solutions. Much of today's PFAS testing and mitigation is limited by cost, leaving many communities at greater risk. JAW supports scientific efforts that work for all people and all environments—not just those with resources.

By investing in natural systems, we invest in a safer water future for generations to come.
